Build a Sellable Asset - J V Crum, III, Conscious Millionaire Coach

One of the least looked at but most important ways for small business owners to make their millions is NOT by building the business - but through selling it during a high growth phase.

I made far more money by cashing in and selling our family's companies than from the year to year running of them. And, it positions you in a cash position to act on new opportunities, ones that leverage you to new financial heights.

Here it is in simple terms. You sell your business for some multiple of your current annual cash flows. If you have considerable land and hard assets, that can add to the equation. In my case, I kept the land, leased it to the buyers, then when it appreciated further, sold it to cash in even bigger.

When you start looking at your business as an asset that you are building not to continue owning, but to sell, you approach your business completely differently. You start to care about what matters in terms of maximizing your selling price. These are your customer lists, the speed with which you are growing your cash flows, the untapped, or only partially tapped opportunities (which you may not be in the position to tap - but which a buyer, with other resources, may be and will give them reasons to pay you even MORE for your business!).

You also can benefit when selling the business by getting more for your companies (because you are conscious that they exist and bargain for part of the savings they buyer will get) for the savings the buyer will have in terms of synergies and leverage due to size. These include purchasing power to buy supplies and services for less than you are having to pay as a smaller business.

THE THREE LEVELS OF SUCCESS - J V Crum, III, Success Coach, Business Coach

There are three levels to YOUR success:

1. Internal—any success that occurs inside of you—such as feeling happier or more fulfilled, having a sense of connection to your core being, and intuitively knowing when and what to do.

2. External—any success that occurs outside of you—such as money and the things it can buy, promotions, awards, and external accomplishments.

3. Relational—any success that occurs between you and anything external to you—such as relationships with people, animals, our planet.

All three dimensions are interrelated. Therefore, increasing your success in one dimension of your life positively affects all of the others.

For instance, if you increase your physical fitness or have more harmonious relationships, you’ll naturally have more positive energy to achieve more in business and make more money.

Having strong financial success frees your energy from worries about paying for life, so you have more energy to just enjoy it!

The irony is that when we pursue money at any cost, we make a series of sacrifices. One of these sacrifices can actually include making less money, not more.

Why?

When the only basis for our decisions is short-term financial gain, we often throw out our values and lose a sense of what matters most in life.

Instead of living with a sense of purpose and doing what we love, we focus on greed at the price of becoming out of sync with who we are, deep down inside.

Many people confuse greed with the amount of money one makes. The fact is someone could make 50 million a year and not be greedy, while someone else could make 50 thousand and be acting with greed.

The reason is simple.

Greed has nothing to do with the amount of money you make—it only relates to how you make it. Greed occurs whenever you make money in ways that are not in the overall best interests of yourself, others, and the world.

Getting Rich doesn’t make you “greedy” – Greed is acting against the best interest of yourself, others and the world. It has nothing to do with whether you become rich. The issue, my friend, is HOW you make your money, not how financially wealthy you become.

The Next Year in Business

Recently I've had a number of business owners ask me my views on the economy and what I think business owners need to be doing now.

I believe we are just seeing the previews of coming attractions that are likely to get much worse than any of us have scene in prior recessions. What does this mean for us as business owners?

1. Now is the time to invest in your future by NOT pulling back and going into fear. You have to move into high gear and show customers what you have to offer that is both different from your competitors and is exactly what they need.

2. Now is the time to manage your emotions and motivate yourself daily by staying in a positive state so that you can notice all of the actual opportunities that this recession will bring to you and your business.

3. Now is the time to look for practical opportunities. Ask yourself what your customers will need and want as the economy worsens. Then ask yourself how you can deliver it to them in ways that will both get them coming back for more and have them sending you referrals. Innovation is simply finding creative ways to address problems. Innovate your products and services so that they meet the needs of a changing financial climate.

I've spoken with a number of people who are having a tougher time of it lately. If YOU are wanting to increase your profits, here is a quick sure-fire way to drop money to your bottom line. It's honest, ethical and based on the principal of adding constant value to your client or customer.

Many people have businesses in which they have a large amount of volume - this is true of any restaurant, most retail establishments, many product sales - and if you are in a business where you have a large number of transactions, here is an easy way to increase your bottom line by adding value to your clients.

Let's imagine you have several hundred transactions a day - many small businesses have a 1,000 or more actually. Think about the small retail establishment or restaurant, fast food type franchise and the like. Even if you only have a 100 or more transactions, what would it be worth to your bottom line to get a single $1 more added to each transaction.

Instead of seeing this as the classic up sell - what would happen if you say it as the "up value" your client strategy. If you could find a simple item or service that you could add to every transaction that added just $1 of revenue (not to mention, $2, $3, $4, $5 to every transaction), what would that do to your revenues and bottom line in 30 days - a single month? OR 365 days, a full year?

Today I was working on my own marketing plan and was thinking about the most valuable marketing tool on this earth. That tool is referrals. Why? Simple - who gives you most referrals? Satisfied Customers! The ones who are your true fans - OR - people who know you and believe in what you are doing, Again, your true fans.

What you MUST do if you want to maximize your success is focus everything that you do on creating raving fans. What I am saying isn't go out and try to manipulate a lot of people or hook wink them with a lot of puff. No - you need to build a rock solid customer pleasing business delivery system. You must provide your customer with such an amazing experience that not only will they never want to leave, they will naturally want to bring their friends and associates to do business with you - because they want them to have the same high quality experiences that they are continually having by being your customer.

This is the most important focus you can have in your business - your customer - then ask them for their refferals. And, when you get them, make certain to show them in a direct and concrete way how much you appreciate it. Send them a Thank YOU note. Give them a GIFT. Make certain that THEY KNOW how SPECIAL it is to you that they send their friends and associates to you.

I was just at Book Expo in Los Angeles last week. It was endless meetings with PR people and other authors. It took up the entire LA Convention Center.

There was an air of excitement everywhere. This is life at it's best. I met so many people who have a strong message they want to share with the world. To me, this is the same as a Business Owner or a Professional who is "on path" with their life.

Success all starts with YOU! The most successful, wealthiest, and happiest people I know are all living an inner passion for making a difference. The wealth they make goes beyond the money. It extends to their clients and customers. A connection runs from inside of them to the people they serve.

They begin by discovering some massive difference they want to make in the world, then they build a business that does that. What is the difference that you want to make? What is that burning desire that you have inside.

It ALL Starts with YOU - that desire that makes you unstoppable.

Why?

Because you have this feeling that the world will be different, that your client's lives and businesses will be better because they do business with you.

1. Every Day know your Top 3 Priorities - in that order - 1, 2, 3, and organize your day so that these are your focal point.

2. Get rid of all the time wasters in your life - right now make a list of all the ways you waste time from doing your errands at different times to ways you keep yourself from getting started more quickly to those extra conversations around that eat up your time. Make the list now.

3. Lean to say NO! Anything that isn't one of your top 3 Priorities or doesn't absolutely have to be done is a distraction. SAY NO TO ALL DISTRACTIONS.

Evaluating Your Actions - J V Crum, III, Conscious Millionaire Coaching

The only way to really evaluate your actions - or for that matter, anyone's - is to first know what your goal is. This, of course, brings up a bigger issue. Most people have no specific goal in mind most of the time and therefore their actions have no specific purpose. If they don't have a specific purpose, then how could you evaluate whether they were worth the time and energy you put into doing them?

Here is my point - if you want to know if your actions are the right ones there is only one way to know. It starts with knowing what your outcome, or goal, was in doing them. I would estimate that 80% or more of many people's actions are done without a specific goal in mind. That is, they might as well have been random.

Can you really afford for your actions to not be strategic in nature - to be tied to specific goals - if you want to achieve at your highest levels?

OF COURSE NOT!

How to remedy quickly....

Set up every day with a clear set of goals - ONE MAJOR GOAL, up to 3 MINOR GOALS - and then only take actions that relate to these GOALS.

There is ALWAYS ONE GOAL that is the most important for you each day - and if you think there are actually 3, 4, 5, 10 goals that are equally important, then I ask you to reconsider your priorities - that is, get clear at the beginning of your day what your real priorities are.

THEN FOCUS YOUR DAY WITH ACTIONS THAT SUPPORT YOUR ONE MAJOR AND UP TO THREE MINOR GOALS FOR THAT DAY. If you get other things done - great - but make sure those actions support Goals that really matter instead of being that "busy work" stuff that ROBS you of your real success in any day!

Family Business - J V Crum, III, Conscious Millionaire Coach

A large number of the millions of small businesses in this country are family companies. That is how I started out. Farther and son or daughter, brothers or sisters, Mother and daughter or son, husband and wife, partners - and what do they all have in common?

Well, I didn't have to get the Masters in Psychology to figure this one out - about one week in business with my dad and I was already experiencing it. Here it is - you can not completely separate out your family issues from your business issues. They are always there - even if you agree that your role with one another when doing business is different from your role with one another from a family perspective, the family role is always there as part of the business.

So what is the solution - actually the real solution is to be conscious that this is occurring. To stay aware, be present with tension or business role interference from family issues. Clear any family matters at home or outside of the office - then when you are in the office stay focused on business interactions. Most of all, the solution comes down to staying aware that the family dynamics are there along side the business ones - and when you need to clear a family matter, do it - then get back to business.

In the 20th Century, Greed and a Win-Loose atmosphere on Creating Wealth and Business Success (or at least, get everything I can in the deal) was pervasive. I remember when I went through my own shift out of this view on what Business Success and Creating Wealth is really all about – it was 1994 and I was in the middle of getting my MBA

I realized that this Win-Loose viewpoint on Creating Wealth and Business Success was founded on 2 incorrect assumptions: (1) there are only 100 cents in a dollar (more on that in a moment), and (2) that I could actually win long term when others lost (not true).

Think about that - will being dishonest and scamming people (a common marketing view, even today) somehow create long term Business Success or be the foundation for Creating Wealth at the highest levels? It isn't (do you do business with people who scam or lie to you – at least after you figure it out? No way!)

Ok – so I realized that Win-Win is THE path to Business Success and Creating Wealth. Only with both people win is the deal ever right. So, what about that comment about 100 cents in a Dollar? The Tech Revolution in the 90’s proved that this isn’t true – What am I getting at?

Synergy – which is another way to say the real value that comes form Partnering and Collaborating (this IS the real path for High Level Business Success, for Creating Wealth at Multi-Millionaire levels in the 21st Century).

The Truth is there are more than 100 cents in a dollar – if the cents (people) collaborate and create synergy – the pennies multiply – this is how Creating Wealth works in the 21st Century – and is an important part of the Conscious Millionaire System for Creating Wealth!

Now, this really is about your Millionaire Mindset – it’s about how YOU choose to see Reality. Do you only see the 100 pennies that most people think are in a dollar – or do you see the Expanded Opportunities that Partnering with Others.

When you look for ways that BOTH of You to WIN – and WIN BIG – you see new possibilities, ways to get more out of the same resources.

100 Pennies is what you’ve been conditioned to believe is there, and nothing more – of course, we were also told in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s (and many people still believe) that for you to win someone has to loose.

But now, more and more people are beginning to realize that When YOU AND OTHERS WIN – We all WIN BIGGER.

I had never had a business course (I only received an MBA after making a couple of million) and through trail and error, successes and failures, rapidly figured out how to become a successful entrepreneur. Without success strategies, you can’t build consistent business success – it simply isn’t possible. So what are the ingredients of a well designed small business strategy?

1. Start with the end result in mind – what do you want to achieve?
2. Keep it simple – I suggest 1-3 steps, so you can easily use it and teach it to others (duplicate your success)
3. Make each step a specific action

Here is a Business Coaching “Strategy for Taking Action” to use as an example:

1. Remember a specific time in which you were highly motivated – see, hear, feel what was occurring in the time – fully associating to it (borrow energy)
2. Think of a first step that you could do achieve your outcome
3. Take that first step plus two more to start a momentum

POWER OF SYSTEMS - J V Crum, III, Conscious Millionaire Coach

Whether you are building a business, are a sales professional or want success in ANY area of your life, without a system for success you will have a hard time achieving your goal.

Truth is - you already have a system. Just you may not know it. However you go about your day and work toward a goal IS your system. However, if you aren't consciously aware of it, you don't have the opportunity to change it so that it is consiously designed to accomplish your goal.
